Starting A Kitchen Garden

This intense workshop is designed to help students start a kitchen garden or improve on their existing food garden. It will address the following topics through lectures, demos, tours and Q&A: Site selection; Planning, design & aesthetics; Soil preparation & composting; Selecting plants (common & uncommon, annual, bi-annual & perennial fruit, flowers, herbs & vegetables); Propagation; Planting (how to & calendar); Maintenance & useful techniques & tips to increase productivity and improve sustainability; Techniques to extend the growing & harvesting seasons; Dealing with pests & attracting beneficial insects; Useful tools & equipments; Bibliography & Sources. Extensive handouts will be distributed. Students will receive a few seedlings for their garden.
Appropriate for gardens & would-be gardens of all sizes and gardeners of any level!
Start Your Own Vegetable & Fruit Transplants from Seeds for the Summer & Fall Kitchen Garden
Date: Sunday April 27, 2008 - 2:00 to 4:30 - Rain or Shine
$40.00/ person ($25 class; $15 seeds & materials); $65/ 2 people sharing their tray
Participants will sow up to two flats of plants choosing seeds from many different varieties and/or cultivars including basil, beans (green, pole, shell etc), celeriac, cucumber, corn, pumpkin, salad greens, melons, sunflower, Swiss chard, tomatillo, late tomatoes, watermelons, winter squash & zucchini. Students will learn to prepare potting medium for their seeds and understand germination conditions. They will sow the seeds in seed flats or pots, and learn care after seedlings emerge, proper transplanting techniques, fertilization practices, pest and disease control as well as other growing and harvesting tips. Participants will take their flats home to tend and transplant at the appropriate time.
Perfect for anybody who want to learn how to start plants from seeds or anybody who wants to have a few plants of different species without having to buy whole seed packets and only use a few seeds.

Spring Salad Days

There are many plants beside lettuce that can be used for spring salads! Although, there are wonderful lettuces out there too... Come and see, touch, smell, taste many different greens and flowers that can be used to make your own special gourmet blend. Instructions on how to grow and harvest them will be provided. We will finish the workshop by eating a salad lunch in the garden, learning how to mix greens for different tastes and texture and how to pair them with different dressings. Take home ideas and recipes.
Making & Using Compost

Compost is the most important thing you can do to improve your garden – and anybody can do it at no additional cost. What is it? How does it do what it does? How does it work? Together we will build a proper compost pile, learning what to do and what not to do, and will review common misconceptions. We will also look at different piles in various stages of decomposition - and learn different ways to make compost as well as how to use it to improve soil and to grow healthier plants. You will leave the workshop ready to make compost that fits into your life-style and use it to improve your garden.
Growing & Cooking with Herbs

In mid-summer, many herbs reach a peak of lushness and flavor. Come and learn about the lore and cultivation of reliable favorite herbs - as well as more unusual ones. This is the prefect time to harvest many herbs to dry, to make herbal vinegars, unusual ice-teas, etc … We will show you how. Also learn how to incorporate herbs in your everyday cooking and in simple yet sophisticated special dinner dishes! We will demonstrate the making of several dishes featuring herbs (appetizer, main, sides, desserts) and give you recipes to replicate at home.

Students will learn what vegetable to start from seeds for fall & winter gardening & prepare potting medium for their seeds. They will sow seeds appropriate for cool gardening in take-home flats, and learn germination conditions, care after seedlings emerge, proper transplanting techniques & fertilization practices. We’ll also discuss direct seeding of vegetables that do not transplant well .

There is more to salad than lettuce! Although, there are wonderful lettuces out there too... Learn how to grow, harvest and mix greens & other ingredients for different tastes & texture. Learn how to make simple as well as unusual dressings.
The Fall Salad class is cancelled. Instead: we are offering “Cooking with Apples from Appetizer to Dessert”
Planning Your New Kitchen Garden (for Next Year)
Session 1, Saturday October 11, 2008, 10:00 to 3:30 pm; Session 2, Sunday October 12, 10:00 to 3:30 pm.
Cost: One session: $75;both sessions $120 (Includes lunch, refreshments & handouts)
This 2 part gardening workshop will teach you everything you need to know to start a successful kitchen garden in the spring.
· Session 1 covers designing (size, location etc); soil; composting; digging vs. raised beds; cover crop; other techniques; tools; structures etc. Specifically, we will go over what to do through this fall & coming winter to be ready to plant next March.
· Session 2 focuses on plants with topics such as plant & cultivar selection of fruit, vegetable and herbs; sourcing; in-door & outdoor seed sowing; other propagation techniques; transplanting; growing, maintaining & harvesting. Garden plans/plant lists be provided. Sessions include demonstration and participation.
